Belle's on Wheels

Written, produced & performed by Jaehn Clare
A gutsy, funny play about a young actor's journey from her feet to a set of wheels.

"It's a semi-true story, believe it or not...
I made up a few things and there's some I forgot.
But the life and the telling are both real to me,
And they all come together and turn out to be
A semi-true story."
- Jimmy Buffett

About the Play

image

Clarity Belle, a sophomore college student, experiences a spinal cord injury which dramatically changes her life.  This one-act play - based on autobiographical material - depicts Clarity's journey through recovery and rehabilitation to a new perspective on and appreciation of her life.  Belle's on Wheels is a very personal piece of theatre which addresses many of the cultural myths and stereotypes that have traditionally separated persons with disabilities from the "mainstream" of our society.  The play is intended for junior high school through adult audiences, and is a single set touring production designed to fit just about any performance space.

Jaehn ClareBelle's on Wheels received a 1989 Commission Award from the British Arts Council/London, and had its World Premiere in an Autumn 1990 Tour, produced by Cosmorama Theatre Company, to over thirty venues in England and Scotland.  The U.S. tour of Belle's... began in Autumn of 1994, and to date has played to thousands of audience members at venues across the country.  Following six performances at the Center Stage Theater in Santa Barbara, CA in early 1995, the play received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Santa Barbara Independent, in the 3rd Annual Indie Award Celebration.  In 1999, Jaehn performed the play at Art & Soul, the 3rd International VSA arts Festival, in Los Angeles, California.

What People Are Saying

"I just want to let you know how much Belle’s On Wheels touched me.  The scene in which Clarity values the wisdom gained from her disability experience over a return to life before disability resonated with me in a context totally unrelated to disability.  Valuing wisdom gained in painful life experiences is apparently universal.  Thanks so much for touching my life."
~ Dorothy Wells, 2006

"Only someone with conviction and the supreme self-confidence of the talented actor could bring off a part which is so physically and emotionally draining with enough reserve for humour and even beauty to shine through."

- Stephen Hunt, London's Disability Now, 1990

"The play allows her to display an impressive range of acting."

- Allan Sadler, London's The Guardian, 1990

"This is not your typical one-woman show, but a highly personal look into the life of a strong and resourceful individual ... absorbing and thought-provoking theater ... [she] maintains her sardonic outlook and self-deprecating sense of humor throughout."

- Josefin Israelachvili, Santa Barbara's  Independent, 1995

"I just want to thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for sharing your life; you helped me realize once again how precious life is."

- Carolyn  Malcolm, Macon Audience, 1997
